About the Artist

Alex Wu grew up with a passion for art. A grandfather architect and sculptor, a father, a designer. His appreciation for the finesse and expression of artists is as close to the fingers on his hand as the family in his heart. A classical monochrome foundation in chinese calligraphy complemented by a deep splash of impressionist colors. Mix, shake well, served over rocks and enjoyed in the setting sun you have the flavor of Alex Wu's brush work.

“It seems like everyone else noticed this passion and labeled me an artist before I noticed it myself. My parents tried in paramount effort to curb these idealisms for a practical pathway in medicine and engineering. Every doodled textbook was lovingly replaced with a new workbook of applied mathematic word problems. They did bestow upon me the grit to finish a degree in Cell and Molecular Biology from UW.
My lack of success in Biology can be attributed to its repetition. I always found it more fun to be a bit of a dreamer and storyteller. I want to express unique freedoms and dynamic departures from the mundane and colorless tedium of Excel. I think people are happiest on an adventure, not just a vacation but a break from their normalcy – a state of unity with ‘savoring a moment’. It is my goal to express this in a tangible way: a fantasy, a harmonious escape -- connected to the warmth in the clouds, the cool in the rocky shade, and how scorched you are because you forgot to reapply sunscreen.
H. Pyle said you need to write in order to be able to illustrate. My foundations lacked this eloquence, but analogously monk poets imbued me with the rationale ‘to reach oneness, is to apply.’ I hope my journey forth with brush and paint brings just as much boundless memories and delight as it was to paint.”
